Who We Are, What We Believe & What We Do

Lliswerry Baptist is a church in Newport, South Wales, in the United Kingdom. We are a Christian Baptist church whose aim is to serve and praise Jesus, reaching out to our local community and further afield.

We believe in the authority of the Bible, and in the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Please see our What We Believe page for further details.

As well as morning and evening Sunday Worship Services, we have weekly Prayer Meetings, Fellowship Meetings, and monthly House Groups. There are activities for children and young people, including Parents & Toddlers, Xalt, trips and a yearly camp. For more detailed information see our When We Meet page and our Youth / Children page.

From time to time we run bible study courses, such as Alpha and Explore, men's nights and ladies' nights, where visitors are always welcome.

Visiting Us For The First Time

First-time visitors to Lliswerry Baptist often come along to our Sunday morning service. This is from 10.45am till about 12 noon. (Much of the following information also applies to the Sunday evening service, which is from 6.30pm till about 8pm.)

Please see our Contact Us page for a map and details of our address. Parking is available at the end of Camperdown Road in the grounds of Camperdown House. But please note that the car park can be full by 10.45am. Generally people start arriving from about 10.30am. Alternative parking can be found in the adjoining streets, but for your first few times we advise arriving in plenty of time.

When you arrive at the church you will usually be greeted at the door by two church members, who will welcome you and show you the way through to the seats in the main part of the church. We are a friendly church, so don't be surprised if a few people say hello and introduce themselves.

During The Service

During our services we sing both modern and traditional worship songs to suit all tastes, and also some children's songs. Words for the songs are shown on the large screen for all to see, whilst music is provided by the worship group (drums, guitar, bass guitar, piano, vocals), by backing track, or played solely on the piano or the organ - it depends on the song.

The pastor or the person leading the service will usually make a few announcements about church events or friends, and there will be times of prayer.

Collection bags will usually be taken down the aisle during the service, for people to make donations to the church if they wish. You don't have to contribute, but we are of course very grateful for all donations received.

At about 11.15am the children go out for Sunday School and crèche.

Our pastor or a guest speaker will gave a talk relating to a passage in the Bible. We encourage people to bring their bibles with them, but we do keep a small amount for people to borrow during the service. The main passage will usually be displayed on the screen. You can listen to some of our sermons on the Sermon Download page.

The service ends around 12 midday, parents collect their children, and people chat with friends. The pastor will usually be found by the door to the church, speaking to people as they leave.

Communion

At times we will hold communion during the service. This is usually in the morning on the third Sunday of the month, and in the evening on the first Sunday of the month.

Communion Bread and WineCommunion is where we do as Jesus taught and remember him by taking bread and wine (we use non-alcoholic grape juice). Bread is broken and given to the congregation. You do not have to take a piece of bread, and in fact you should not take it until you wish for Jesus to take a part in your life.

The 'wine' is given out, usually in small cups. We are told whether to drink from it straight away, or wait and all drink at the same. Again, you should only take the wine if you wish for Jesus to take a part in your life.

It is a very special time. We take a few moments to think about Jesus and the price he paid for us.
